I’m not sure why but there is something very seductive about miniatures: the perfect lines of a delicate captain’s chair. A Bombay chest of drawers with bowed curves and swirls of real wood grain. Or a deeply ornate, 6-arm chandelier with bronzed elegance and antique finishing. In short, anything that can fit in the palm of my hand!

These pint size petites mesmerized my thinking at a very early age. Maybe it was the only thing in life I could control at the time (and still, I suppose)? Whatever the reason, miniatures have always held a very special place in my heart and have provided me with the chance to dream, explore and ultimately offer a platform to create.

Back in 2009, I was part of significant layoff from the company I had been working at for many years. Given the serious economic and employment environment at the time, I knew I was in it for the long haul and wouldn’t be going back to work any time soon. I needed to find a way to keep my mental state in check given the stresses of the situation. So I built myself a workshop in the lower lever of the house I had owned at the time and started making miniatures. And I have not stopped since!

I enjoy making furniture in 1/12 scale. That means 1″ is the equivalent to 12″ in real life. My objective is to use materials and finishes found in full size objects and use techniques employed by craftsman working in traditional sizes. Although I must say I have not quite mastered the .003″ dove tail or mortis and tenon. Yet. But I’m working on it.

I also recently opened a retail shop in Hastings-on-Hudson featuring fine scale miniatures in addition to a gallery to showcase more significant works. I use the space for conducting classes in miniature making as well as to house my workbench which holds my tools and equipment in addition to a number of half finished projects!
